Capability Development Enabling Predictive Logistics for the Future Force
Since 2008, the Army has been working to gain approved requirements for Capabilities-Based Maintenance Plus (CBM+), a prognostic maintenance capability that automates and streamlines the maintenance workflows associated with tactical platforms for a quicker return to mission-ready.
In 2020, team Soliel began revitalization of the CBM+ effort with an overhaul of the 2015 CBM+ Concept of Operation (CONOP) document, into a new “Predictive Logistics” (PL) CONOP. Soliel contributed heavily to the PL CONOP, making a more compelling case for CBM+ and introducing additional capabilities that incorporate vehicle health data from on-mission combat platforms into the commander’s decision-making processes. Soliel’s research and interviews produced detailed new vignettes/user stories into the revamped CONOP, illustrating CBM+ digitized maintenance flows and associated contribution to mission readiness, as well as the benefits of a Sustainment-informed Common Operational Picture during Large Scale Combat Operations.
The Soliel team was then put on task to develop an Abbreviated Capabilities Development Document (A-CDD) to begin the process for achieving Army-approved requirements for PL. Team Soliel researched and wrote PL’s desired operational characteristics in the A-CDD, and developed the senior leader presentation for Army input and buy-in. The PL A-CDD was approved by Army Futures Command in February 2024. As a result, the Army has begun limited fielding of PL capabilities, including the long sought-after of CBM+ capabilities.
